Online "Aspie" quizzes
November 11, 2019
I cringe. . Online autism quizzes are the fastest route to pathologising a person and completely overlooking an identity and culture. . They’re based on behaviour and a superficial understanding of what being autistic encompasses. . In my own experience, I missed so much of the many aspects of my autistic expression because I was still heavily masking. . Had you asked me the same year of my first diagnosis whether I struggled with sensory input, I’d have answered no. . I just didn’t have the understanding of my own experience of the world without it being heavily conditioned and undiscovered. . Autism is so much more than a pathology, a list of criteria, a medical diagnosis. . The autistic community works hard to overcome prejudices and judgements, misunderstandings and misconceptions around autism and those quizzes just blow it all out of the water. . Give yourself time. . Read, talk to autistic adults, journal. . Tune into your truth, your reality, no matter how silly it may feel to begin with. . Try not to let the opinions, thoughts, fears and insecurities of others interfere with your experience of life and who you are. . Many autistic people will not even receive a diagnosis due to the rigidity of current criteria and our focus on behaviour and outward appearance. . Listen to your heart; your soul. . Make friends with yourself, raw and authentically. . Take your time. . But please, don’t allow or rely on an online test to tell you who you are. . Being autistic is a sacred way of being in this world and is far more expansive than criteria or questionnaires.
