We are heading home today

October 17, 2019

We’re heading home this afternoon

Were we meant to leave today?

Nah

We got here last night

But we’re heading home today

Once upon a time

I would’ve cried

Felt hard done by

Felt it was unfair

Felt angry

Cheated

Frustrated

But today

We just giggle

Brush it off

This is our normal

Our little people are excited

Happy

Holidays!

Going somewhere new!

Excited!

Overwhelmed!

The demand avoidance intensifies

Instructed by higher levels of anxiety

Because anxiety isn’t always just associated with doing things that seem challenging

It’s connected with excitement

New things

Holidays!

Hoorah!

We swapped and changed beds

Removed fragile antiques and pretty things

Because we are sensory seeking beings

And things get thrown, sniffed, pulled apart

This is how we adapt

Learn

Feel safe and familiarise ourselves with our surroundings

But we’re heading home today

Nobody has slept

Sleeping arrangements up and down

Tears and shouts and protests and exhaustion

And then we arise

At 7am

And we are all tired but happy

Happy to swim today

To experience the new and the different

To smell the new, salty ocean air

To play together and laugh

We are exhausted but happy

We make amends for snapping at each other from a place of anxiety

And remember who we are as a family unit

Love

Perfectly imperfect

And we are heading home today

Happy, tired, excited, overwhelmed, grateful

For the love and acceptance we have for ourselves

And each other

As an autistic family

We are heading home today

Back to familiarity

Safety

Predictability

Taking the love for each other

Everywhere we go

We are heading home today

Hearts full.
