What can I control today?

July 20, 2019

This is me

Peering out my front window

Fixating on parts of my lawn

Longer than the rest

Wood chips

Over the brick boundary

Of my garden

By the uneven pruning

Of my roses.

Looking for problems

Scanning, seeking

To be

This is how I know

I’m anxious.

Being anxious

Results from feeling

A lack

Of control.

So my very clever

Autistic brain

Problem solving

By nature

Sets to work

To seek problems

To solve

In order to regain

My perceived lack

Of control.

My brain can not identify

The origin of the anxiety

That’s my conscious mind’s job.

My brain just wants to fix it

In the only it way it knows how.

My body takes its cues from my brain

And I find myself standing here

By my window

Looking to solve

It takes a little while

For my conscious mind

To catch up

Slow processing

But with years of practise

It gets there.

Identification of the actual

The origin of my

And I’m then able

To step away

From the window.
