Autism & Social Change

July 20, 2019

Many autistic people are wired to be globally conscious, with a strong sense of justice.
.
We notice injustices, wrongs and rights in childhood.
.
We ask questions our adults often don’t have answers to, or aren’t sure how to answer.
.
Often we find others feel confronted by the words we speak, the observations we share.
.
We are told everything is complex, with many layers.
.
That often, nothing is simple.
.
Yet we see and know and feel deep within
.
That caring for our planet
.
Respecting culture
.
Demonstrating kindness, compassion and empathy
.
Is simple.
.
Is black and white.
.
Is not complex.
.
We see people, places and things
.
In their truest, most authentic form.
.
Underneath the anger, the pain, the layers.
.
We see.
.
We know dishonesty
.
We understand personal incapacity, when people just ‘can’t’
.
But we see and know and feel truth.
.
We cry for injustices
.
On behalf of the world
.
And we cry for victories
.
On behalf of the world
.
The pain is often too much
.
So we avoid the news
.
The comment sections
.
We shut down.
.
Then others receive us
.
As lacking empathy
.
Disconnected
.
Apathetic
.
In our own worlds.
.
Sometimes our own world
.
The one we believe in
.
The one we create
.
Is safer
.
Than the one
.
We all suffer within.
.
Make no mistake
.
You’ll see us in the frontlines
.
In the media
.
Marching in the streets
.
Waving banners
.
Writing
.
Singing and chanting
.
Writing policy
.
Advocating
.
Because we are connected
.
Here to create change.
