Autistic people are so fragile

March 5, 2019

Autistic people are so fragile.

So fragile.

I cannot emphasise this enough.

So, so fragile.

Don’t be fooled

By the mask we wear

The smiles

The eye contact

The kind words in response

To demands and pressures

That we fear

Will potentially

Burn us out.

Setting boundaries

Brings

Disapproval

From others

And that disapproval

Hurts us.

It’s another

Piece

Tapped away

By that tiny hammer

Of

“You should do better”.

But

There is no better

There is only

Reality

Capacity

Acceptance

Many autistics

Are in a cycle

Of standing up

Thriving

Demand and pressure

Taking blows

Processing

Resting

Recovering

Standing up

Thriving

Demand and pressure

And on it goes

Often

The more we demonstrate

We are capable of

The more

That is expected

Of us

And we too

Are often in denial

About our capacity

Our limits

What we can handle

When we need to rest

Keep on going

You’re almost there

You’re reaching normal

And

Bang

Burn out

We often don’t know

That it’s too much

Until it’s

Too much

Acceptance

Love

Nurturing

Support

Acceptance is key.

Focus on our strengths

What we do well

There is so much

We have so much to offer

So much love

Kindness

Authenticity

All the values

This world is

Starved of

Appreciate our qualities

Respect our strengths

Be mindful

Of where encouragement

Ends

And pressure

Accompanied by

The message

Of

Not good enough

Begins.

It is a fine line. A very fragile, fine line.
